Early memories of the years spent at the Peking opera school during the rigorous training undertaken with the other 65 members of the troupe. Working for what seemed more than 25 hours a day, the day started at 7.00am where Master Lau and her classmates would get up and take the bus to where SiFu William Yu (Master Lau’s Peking Opera teacher) lived. At 12.00midday there was a break for lunch and then start again at 2.00pm for more floor practice until 6.00pm, from there it was time to hop back on the bus and go to the theatre where warm up costume and make up had to be applied ready for the first show at 8.30pm. The troupe would then perform until 10.00pm time to clean up and get back on the bus to arrive home at around 11.00pm
Just before midnight was time for a quick snack before going to sleep at round 12.00am, sometimes extra hours would be put in around Chinese new year and other holidays, this regime was followed seven days a week.
Master Lau recounts the same tales that Jackie Chan has often mentioned of the strict and very disciplined training whilst at the Opera school, punishment sometime came in the form of doing a handstand up against a wall for an hour.
